Many of the local courses are named for their designers. Each of the plantations - otherwise known as gated communities - on Hilton Head has at least one golf course, with the single exception of Windmill Harbour. Hilton Head Plantation has the most, with four 18-hole golf courses. Sea Pines Resort has three: the Ocean course, the Sea Marsh course, and, of course, Harbour Town Golf Links. Palmetto Dunes also has three: the George Fazio, the Robert Trent Jones, and the Arthur Hills. Another Arthur Hills course was built at Palmetto Hall Plantation Club.
Pete Dye has had a hand in the development or renovation of four Hilton Head courses (one in Colleton River Plantation, one in Long Cove Club, and one in Port Royal Plantation) along with Harbour Town Golf Links, where he collaborated with Jack Nicklaus. In addition, Nicklaus himself has worked on at least two others: the 1992 course at Colleton River Plantation and Indigo Run's 1993 Golden Bear course.
